Approach
Carolyn is a believer of dealing with issues in a straightforward manner to help individuals recognize and set goals to eliminate or lessen problems. She uses principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to assist with recognizing unhelpful thinking and behavior and helps individuals learn better ways to cope with problems. Although discussing past issues is helpful in getting to know an individual and what has led to the issues, goal setting and what needs to be done now is encouraged for individuals in counseling. In some instances, Reality Therapy is used to discuss responsibility for one’s own actions and making good choices. Clients are encouraged to imagine their lives in a happy state and then work to achieve that goal. A frequent question of Carolyn is, “What would you like to see happen as a result of being here today?” Solution-Focused Therapy is used to help guide individuals to formulate a solution and determine the best way to get there. Clients are encouraged to take responsibility for their issues and work proactively with Carolyn to set goals that they can achieve.
