Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Credentials and Professional Experience
Kristin Chapman is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Georgia. She earned her Master in Science from Valdosta State University. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in Human Sexuality Studies with an emphasis on clinical sex therapy. She has an interest in working with couples and relationships as well as the LGBTQ community. Kristin has a passion for traveling and has visited over 15 countries and traveled to China, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands as part of an academic program to gain cross-cultural understanding and study counseling from a wider global perspective.
Kristin has experience working in a variety of clinical settings as: a suicide counselor, grief therapist at a hospice facility, substance abuse counselor, a conflict resolution facilitator, HIV/STD counselor & sexuality educator at a public health center, private practice psychotherapist, and as therapist in a University’s counseling center. She is also PREPARE/ENRICHED certified, which is a couples assessment and treatment tool.
Approach
Kristin works from a humanistic perspective, which means she values the worth of each individual and operates with a non-judgmental mindset. She then collaborates with her clients to achieve their goals and develop healthy strategies to deal with life’s challenges. Kristin strives to be authentic and genuine so that the therapeutic process has transparency for the client. In therapy sessions, Kristin believes the client and therapist should be equals and that clients are the experts of their own lives. Therapists then use the knowledge they have of the therapeutic process to help clients make meaning of their lives and facilitate change.
Theoretically, Kristin conceptualizes problems from a systems theory approach. This means that change can be brought about by recognizing patterns, connections, and interrelationships at play in your life. For example, many clients are affected by various relational, situational, and societal settings in which they exist. They can range from the internal world of the individual to ever radiating systems including family, work, social spheres, society, government oversight, and beyond. Each of these systems are linked, overlap, and can affect each other sometimes by creating problems.
